Greens Commend Groundbreaking Mental Health Research

Greens Mental Health spokesperson Senator Penny Wright has commended a groundbreaking report by a worldwide alliance of scientists, identifying a link between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Studies involving tens of thousands of patients have identified variations in the genetic code which are associated with both conditions.

Senator Wright acknowledged that the findings are the result of the work of scientists from more than 20 nations, including an Australian team led by University of NSW psychiatrist Philip Mitchell.

"These are important and exciting results, offering a significant clue to the relationship between these two serious conditions. And with more knowledge comes the hope of more effective treatments," said Senator Wright.

"Schizophrenia affects 1 in 100 people and bipolar disorder affects about one in 200 people in any given year. While some people can be treated effectively, many others struggle and find their lives disrupted by their symptoms."

"I commend those scientists who have been working globally to understand better the biology behind schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Their work will bring hope to many who experience the symptoms of these illnesses on a daily basis."
