Greens formally demand that State Govt release ALL lead sampling results
The Greens have today demanded that the State Government release ALL lead sampling results, saying there is no reason at this stage to suspect that possible lead contamination is limited to the Fremantle Port.
Greens Transport spokesperson Alison Xamon MLC issued the written demand earlier today.
“So far this scandal has only played out as relating to the people surrounding the Fremantle Port,” said Alison Xamon MLC.
“But the reports of lead carbonate outside their supposedly fool-proof double bags raises concerns about lead dust all along the length of the train line from Leonora to Fremantle.”
“All the residents of eastern and southern Perth who are near that Midland to Kwinana line are entitled to be concerned about possible lead dust contamination unless and until the State Govt can release results from the sampling sites all along that line.”
Ms Xamon said that in particular the public of WA needed to see the results from the soil sampling sites all along the Midland to Kwinana line.
“Clearly this issue has been mishandled by at least two State Government Ministers so far, and speedy action must be taken to contain public concerns about not just this proponent but about the administration of environmental laws generally.”
“Those concerns are of course going to be sharpest in the 22 metropolitan suburbs and numerous country towns that this lead has until recently passed through.”
“Those communities deserve immediate transparency with the results of sampling undertaken so far,” Ms Xamon concluded.
