2158. Hon Alison Xamon to the Minister for Transport representing the Minister for Health

I refer to the Healthy School Project, and ask -

(1) Will the Minister confirm that Federal funding for this program is ceasing as of 1 July 2010?

(2) Will the Department of Health continue to supply staff to assist schools with this program once Federal funding ceases?

(3) Have other sources of funding been identified to enable this program to continue?

(4) What advice will you be providing to schools that have not yet had an opportunity to seek funding for kitchen gardens under the Healthy School Project?

Hon SIMON O’BRIEN replied:

(1) The Federal Government does not fund the WA Healthy Schools Project. The project is funded by the Western Australian Government through the WA contribution to the Australian Better Health Initiative (ABHI), Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Program.

(2) In 2010-2011 WA Health will fund the Healthy Schools Project. The funding provided supports the
employment of staff to deliver the project.

(3) Funding for 2010-2011 has been identified within the WA Health budget. No alternative sources of funding have been identified to support the project.

(4) Schools that have not received funding through the WA Healthy Schools Project and that have a specific interest in school kitchen gardens would be directed to other sources of information, advice and support. Such as the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program, Healthway's Health Promoting Schools Grants, City Farm, Woolworths Community Grants, Coles and Junior Landcare School Garden Grants and the Australian Sustainable Schools initiative.
