"The Federal Government must set standards for bunkers before the bushfire season hits or risk Hills residents dying in poorly constructed "backyard ovens", according to East Metropolitan MLC Alison Xamon.
"If Federal attempts fail, the State should put up legilsation as a "matter of absolute urgency" or at the very least, deliver a strong education compaign on the risks."
"We need to set standards on seals, inslulation, oxygen supply and a means to communicate with the outside world, otherwise bunkers can be incredibly dangerous," Ms Xamon said.

"Upper House Greens MP Alison Xamon said this week that fears that people struggling with mental illness would be caught up in the mandatory sentencing laws had been realised.
"Compounding this tragedy is the reality that mandatory sentencing provision shave been implemented at almost the same time that we have witnessed unprecedented cuts to mental health services Statewide," Ms Xamon said.
"When we remove judicial discretion we remove the capacity for our judges and magistrates to determine the individual circumstances of those who come before them."
