Greens spokesperson for Communities Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today echoed the community sector’s call for a six-month moratorium on tenant evictions involving children or tenants with severe mental illness from public housing in Western Australia following revelations that more than 300 tenants were served with court orders or evicted by bailiffs in the 10 months to April.

Charges laid over teenager’s death long overdue: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Worker Safety and Industrial Relations  the Hon Alison Xamon MLC has expressed dismay over the length of time it has taken for WorkSafe to lay charges over the death of teenage construction worker Wesley Ballantine.

“It is now two and a half years since Wesley died at work.  It has taken an unacceptable amount of time for these charges to be laid,” she said.

“There may still be a case for the police to also investigate Wesley’s death further.

Government abandons commitment to transcultural mental health: Greens

Greens spokesperson for mental health and  multicultural affairs the Hon Alison Xamon MLC has expressed her dismay as answers to her questions in Parliament last night revealed that the WA State Government has abandoned its commitment to transcultural mental health services despite the dire need for additional services being called for in the 10 year Mental Health and Other Drug Plan.

Greens spokesperson for health the Hon Alison Xamon MLC is calling on the Government to take immediate action to improve Aboriginal children’s ear health following the release of a damning Auditor General’s report today.

The World Health Organisation has found that Aboriginal children have rates of chronic ear infections at such high rates that it represents an urgent public health problem.  By contrast, it found that overall Australian rates are amongst the lowest in the world.

Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens spokesperson for children and youth justice, has called for a total rethink of the approach to young offenders as questions she asked in Parliament last night revealed a staggering 81.72% of young people released from detention returned to either sentenced detention or adult custody within five years.
