Shortage of addiction specialist clinicians in the WA health system: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Minister for Mental Health to urgently address a shortage of addiction specialist psychiatrists and physicians in the Western Australian health system.

Answers to questions Ms Xamon asked in Parliament have revealed that there are only 2 registered specialist addiction psychiatrists and 14 registered specialist addiction physicians employed in the entire Western Australian health system.

Child protection failings reinforce need for independent oversight body

Last night in parliament Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens spokesperson for Child Protection, renewed her call for independent oversight of child protection services in the wake of the WA Coroner’s adverse findings against the then Department for Child Protection and Family Services (CPFS).

Ms Xamon said the Coroner’s inquest into the deaths of 13 children and young people in the Kimberley identified a range of areas where improvements should be made to address high numbers of suicides by Aboriginal children and young people, including in the delivery of child protection services.

Almost one in four Regional Youth Justice Services positions vacant

Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Minister for Corrective Services to urgently address staffing issues in Regional Youth Justice Services (RYJS), as answers to questions asked in Parliament yesterday revealed 23 out of 101 positions (almost one in four) are currently vacant.

Greens spokesperson for Industrial Relations and Worker Safety Hon Alison Xamon MLC has expressed outrage following allegations of the Government’s failure to hold Chevron to account for exposing its workers to toxic chemicals on the Gorgon LNG project.

“It is now two years since the Project began, I dread to think the degree to which workers may have been exposed to toxic substances over that time,” she said.

“Allowing Chevron another year to get its house in order is ludicrous.

Over crowded, understaffed prisons increase likelihood of violence and sexual assault

Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services, has today renewed her call on the McGowan Government to get serious about addressing prison numbers as recent questions in Parliament revealed sexual assaults in WA prisons have increased almost threefold in the last 12 months.

Ms Xamon said that the increase, from eight sexual assaults in 2017-18 to 21 already this financial year, painted a very worrying picture of life inside our correctional facilities.
