Hon Alison Xamon MLC, spokesperson for Mental Health, has acknowledged the significant contribution of Mental Health Commissioner Timothy Marney after hearing news of his resignation today.
Ms Xamon said “Mr Marney’s depth of experience in the public sector, combined with his leadership roles in not for profit mental health agencies and his openness about his own lived experience have combined to make him an excellent Commissioner.”
Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services, has last in Parliament again called on the McGowan government to act on its election commitment to reform WA’s youth justice system.
Ms Xamon said the adverse findings against the (then) Department of Corrective Services by the WA State Coroner in her inquest into the deaths of 13 children and young people in the Kimberley provided further evidence that the current youth justice model completely failed to meet the needs of vulnerable Aboriginal children.
Greens spokesperson for Multicultural Affairs, Sexuality and Gender Diversity Hon Alison Xamon MLC is dismayed by the inadequacy of the Government’s response to her question in Parliament yesterday about hate crime in WA.
Ms Xamon’s question revealed that police do not have a comprehensive understanding what hate crime is, meaning they are unable to report on the extent of hate crimes committed in WA.
Greens spokesperson for Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has said that the Code of Practice for the mental health of FIFO workers released today, whilst an improvement on the draft previously circulated, still falls short of its promise as a meaningful guide for the prevention of adverse mental health and high suicide rates amongst FIFO workers.
“I have very real concerns about the Code’s ability to provide adequate guidance for managers, particularly those who are inexperienced or operating on small, new sites,” she said.
Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Minister for Corrective Services to urgently address serious concerns identified by the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services (OICS) in its latest report, released today.
The report, which details the findings of the inspection of Hakea Prison undertaken in July and August 2018, characterises the prison as “overcrowded, over-stretched and over-stressed.”
