Greens back move to have State apologise for “institutionalised baby theft”
The Greens have today added their voices to calls for an historic State Government apology for the aggressive adoption policies that Greens MPs described as “institutionalised baby theft.”
WA’s State and Federal Greens have joined forces on this issue, pledging to speak in favour of the move in upcoming Parliamentary sitting weeks and push for implementation on today’s promising statements by State Health Minister Dr Kim Hames.
“When Labor MLA David Templeman brought this issue up in a moving speech in the State Lower House last week we were quick to agree with his call for a cross-party approach,” said State spokesperson on both Women and Children, Alison Xamon MLC.
“This cause will touch the hearts of so many Western Australians, whether they have kids of their own or not, and I’m sure the condemnation of past practices in this area will reach across all political boundaries,” added the East Metropolitan MP.
Greens Senator Rachel Siewert, who played a key role in recent months in pushing for the Federal and State apology for the Forgotten Australians, also backed the call for action on what she called “institutionalised baby theft”, promising to raise the issue Federally in coming Parliamentary weeks.
“It is tragic that the country’s attention will now be called toward another example of systemic malpractice relating to children,” said Senator Siewert, the party’s Federal spokesperson on both Health and Human Services.
“But it’s vital for the women and children involved that we raise these dark historic realities in order to help with the healing of all concerned,” added Senator Siewert.
