Non-petrol vehicles — Perth use
4780. Hon Alison Xamon to the Minister for Finance representing the Minister for Transport
I refer to licensing electric golf carts and other small, non-petrol vehicles for local use in precincts with low speed limits, and I ask —
(1) Is the Minister aware that certain areas in Arizona licence the use of these vehicles on public roads in suitably speed-limited areas?
(2) Does the Minister concur that there are a number of suitable areas in Perth, such as Northbridge, Leederville, Subiaco and Victoria Park in which the use of such vehicles could be successful?
(3) If no to (2), why not?
(4) Will the Minister commit to considering such a scheme?
Hon SIMON O’BRIEN replied:
The Department of Transport advises:
(1) Yes
(2) No
(3) Information from the United States of America’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that these types of vehicles which reach a top speed of 30–40 km/h, are not required to meet any criteria for vehicle crashworthiness in the United States of America.
(4) No
