SHENTON PARK REHABILITATION HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT PETITION

Petition

HON ALISON XAMON (North Metropolitan) [2.50 pm]: I present a petition containing 957 signatures couched in the following terms —

To the President and Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled.

We the undersigned residents of Western Australia are opposed to the planned clearing of approximately half of the bushland at the Shenton Park Hospital Redevelopment site under Improvement Scheme 1. This clearing is contrary to key government planning policies, advice by scientific experts and the community consultation outcomes, which clearly indicate this bushland should be entirely retained, safeguarded and enhanced.

Your petitioners therefore respectfully request the Legislative Council:

  1. To amend the Improvement Scheme so that the bushland is entirely retained, safeguarded and enhanced.
  2. To launch an inquiry into:

a. How 100% of the bushland can be retained;

b. Whether the plan to clear the bushland is compliant with relevant planning policy and if not, is there appropriate justification and information for departure from any such policy;

c. The decision making, assessment and reporting processes of the (then) Department for Planning in relation to the draft Improvement Scheme and whether the ecological value of the bushland was properly considered and related planning policies duly applied; and

d. Whether the Department gave the Western Australian Planning Commission appropriate recommendations and advice about the bushland and relevant planning policies for the purposes of the Commission’s decision on the draft Improvement Scheme.

And your petitioners as in duty bound, will ever pray.
