HON ALISON XAMON (East Metropolitan) [10.15 pm]: I rise this evening to welcome the Council to the International Year of Biodiversity. White Ribbon Day Adjournment

Date:
26 November 2009

HON ALISON XAMON (East Metropolitan) [6.16 pm]: I had hoped to make my adjournment speech yesterday but by the time we adjourned, yesterday had become today. I figured that at two o’clock in the morning I would not be particularly popular if I had decided to extend what had been a very long day even further!

Forgotten Australians

Date:
17 November 2009

HON ALISON XAMON (East Metropolitan) [10.15 pm]: I rise this evening, the day after the federal government finally issued the long-overdue apology to those people who have become known as the “Forgotten Australians”. The forgotten Australians were among those from half a million children who in the last century, from the 1920s to the 1970s, found themselves in institutional care, whether it was in an orphanage or some other form of out-of-home care.

Jarrahdale Forests (Adjournment)

Date:
14 October 2009

I rise tonight to speak on the future of Jarrahdaleand its forests. Those members who have not had the pleasure of visiting Jarrahdale will be interested to know that it is a beautiful spot on the very edge of the east metropolitan region, about 50 kilometres south of Perth in the Darling Range. Jarrahdale has a long history since white settlement, and obviously an even longer history prior to that. It was originally established as a timber milling town, and it has remained a timber milling town for more than 100 years, so it has a very long history of milling.

Child Death Review - Implementation of recommendations motion (debate)

Date:
14 October 2009

HON ALISON XAMON (East Metropolitan) [4.16 pm]: The Greens welcome this motion that has been put before the house, and we value the opportunity to contribute to the consideration of this important issue at this level. This is the sort of motion that is well worthy of consideration by the Council, and I thank Hon Sue Ellery for putting it forward. At a personal level, I am a mum of small children, and the welfare of children everywhere is a matter that sits very close to my heart. This report of the Child Death Review Committee does not make for easy reading.

Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2008- Second Reading debate

Date:
18 August 2009

I begin my comments on the Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2009 by placing on record that, in opposing this bill, the Greens (WA) are not suggesting that violence towards police officers or any other public officer, or in fact anyone at all, is acceptable. Our police, nurses, prison officers, ambulance officers and teachers all deserve to be safe at work, as do our cleaners, bus drivers, lab technicians, gardeners, electricians and, I might suggest, even politicians. All workers deserve to be safe at work. I have a long history of working towards upholding workers. safety.

Anstey-Keane Bushland

Date:
21 October 2009

HON ALISON XAMON (East Metropolitan) [10.22 pm]: I rise this evening to talk about an issue I have been assisting with in Forrestdale in the east metropolitan region. The area I am talking about has been described as a “botanical jewel”; it is the Anstey-Keane bushland and wetland in the suburb of Forrestdale. Unfortunately, the integrity of this important area is currently under quite severe threat.
