Decision to cut funding for Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre outrageous

Greens Member for North Metropolitan Region Hon Alison Xamon MLC has called on the Minister for Education to reverse her decision to cut funding to the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre, calling it “outrageous.”

“This is the latest appalling attack on the education of WA children – and its announcement during the December break was heartless,” Ms Xamon said.

“The Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre is a vital resource for teaching children living in the metropolitan area about biodiversity and the wonders of the State’s unique environment.

School of the Air cuts has not been thought through

Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens spokesperson for Education, today reiterated her call for the Minister for Education to reverse her decision to abolish the School of the Air (SOTA).

“It is clear that quite simply the groundwork has not been done to justify the announcement to close SOTA,” Ms Xamon said.

“We know that no consultation took place before the decision was announced and that as a result the decision has raised more questions than it answers.  The fact that this has occurred just before Christmas leaving families distressed is appalling.

Greens call on Government to implement Royal Commission recommendations

The Greens (WA) have today called on the Commonwealth and State Governments to commit to implementing the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Greens spokesperson for Child Protection Hon Alison Xamon MLC said she welcomed the Royal Commission’s final report, presented today,  which marked the completion of the Royal Commission’s mammoth and distressing five-year task.

Cuts contradict children’s right to education: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Education Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Government to reverse its decision to cut $64 million from the State’s Education budget from 2019.

Ms Xamon said the repurposing of Tuart College and the change of program delivery at Canning College would disadvantage students who needed alternative pathways to university.

“These colleges have for decades played a critical role in assisting students who, whatever reason, may not have satisfactorily completed Year 12,” Ms Xamon said.

“They have been their avenue into university.

NDIS implementation process must be transparent: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Disability Hon Alison Xamon MLC has called on the Government to ensure people with a people with a disability have a say in how the NDIS is run and all processes are transparent, following its announcement today that WA will join the Federal NDIS system.

“It is about time the sector had some certainty over the future of the NDIS in Western Australia,” Ms Xamon said.

“Nine months have now passed since the ALP was elected and people with a disability have been experiencing considerable anxiety not knowing what supports they can access and when.
