Greens spokesperson for the Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today welcomed the passage of amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act and the Residential Parks (Long-stay Tenants) Act which aim to reduce barriers to victims of domestic violence seeking safe accommodation.
“These important amendments enable a domestic violence victim to change locks and to implement security measures without first seeking approval, and to leave a tenancy without facing the prospect of having to pay compensation to the lessor,” said Ms Xamon.
Greens spokesperson for Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called for urgent action to address the mental health of FIFO workers following the latest report from the Mental Health Commission, which has found one third of FIFO workers experience high or very high levels of distress.
Ms Xamon said the report’s findings were deeply disturbing, with distress levels among this group of workers, double that of a benchmark group.
“The evidence is now undeniable – current practices in parts of the mining industry present an unacceptable risk to workers,” she said.
Greens spokesperson for Seniors and Ageing Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called for urgent and long overdue reform to the Retirement Villages Act, to ensure better protections for Western Australian seniors.
Speaking in Parliament, Ms Xamon said too many seniors had been subject to unfair practices including complicated contracts; mismanagement; discrepancies between the rights of village owners and residents; excessive fees, and inadequate or lengthy complaints resolution processes.
Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services and Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC is renewing her calls for the Government to take urgent action toward addressing the mental health needs for prisoners in response to the damning report into prisoner access to secure mental health treatment released by the Inspector of Custodial Services today.
The Inspector’s latest inquiry was prompted by the transfer of two women in horrific circumstances from Bandyup Women’s Prison to the Frankland Centre (the only secure forensic mental health facility in WA) last year.
Greens spokesperson for Alcohol and Other Drugs Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today welcomed new Government funding to target the supply of meth into WA, but stresses the new money must not be at the expense of other services which are working in the fight against meth.
Ms Xamon said the Meth Helpline, for example, had undergone crippling cuts in the months before this latest funding announcement.
She said people were crying out for help to deal with meth and its devastating effects, but were not always able to access it.
